Our story

From a humble kitchen in Amritsar to an award-winning restaurant in Norway — CurryHouse is a love letter to authentic Indian flavour.

Our History

Sixteen years of
honest cooking

CurryHouse opened its doors in 2008 on a quiet street in Oslo, founded on a single promise: to bring the real taste of North India to Norway — no shortcuts, no compromise.

What started as a 12-seat takeaway quickly earned a devoted following. Word spread about the hand-ground spice blends, the clay tandoor fired every morning, and the lamb slow-cooked for six hours. Within two years we expanded, and by 2013 CurryHouse was awarded Best Indian Restaurant in Oslo by Restaurantguiden.

Today, over 32 dishes — many unchanged since day one — continue to bring warmth and joy to thousands of guests every month.

Meet the owner

Chef Raj Sharma

Founder & Head Chef

Raj grew up in Amritsar, Punjab — one of India's great culinary cities, home to the Golden Temple and the legendary langar kitchens that feed tens of thousands every day. From the age of eight he learned alongside his grandmother, grinding masala by hand and watching dough puff over an open flame.

After training at the Institute of Hotel Management in Delhi and working in kitchens across Mumbai and Jaipur, Raj moved to Oslo in 2004. He quickly realised that authentic Indian food was nearly impossible to find — watered-down curries and pre-made sauces were the norm.

In 2008 he took the leap, investing his savings into a small space, importing a traditional clay tandoor, and sourcing whole spices directly from Punjab. "I wanted people here to taste what my grandmother cooked," he says. "That's still the only standard I hold us to."

Today Raj leads a team of six chefs, all trained in-house in traditional techniques. He still tastes every sauce before service begins — every single day.

Indian cuisine is one of the oldest and most diverse culinary traditions on earth — a tapestry of regions, religions, and seasons woven together by a shared love of spice.

The Spice Philosophy

At CurryHouse we grind our own spice blends fresh each morning — cumin, coriander, cardamom, fenugreek, and over a dozen more. No pre-made powders. Spices are toasted whole before grinding to release their full essential oils.

The Tandoor

Our traditional clay tandoor reaches over 480°C — hotter than any conventional oven. Breads blister and char in seconds. Meats marinated in yoghurt and spice emerge smoky, juicy, and unlike anything else. It is the heartbeat of our kitchen.

Slow-Cooked Tradition

Our Dal Makhani simmers for eight hours. Our lamb rogan josh braises low and slow until the meat falls from the bone. There is no fast track to flavour this deep — time is the secret ingredient North Indian cooking has always relied on.

Our menu draws primarily from the kitchens of Punjab, Delhi, and Rajasthan — rich gravies, robust spicing, tandoor breads, and slow-braised meats that define the flavours most people associate with Indian food at its finest.

Indian cuisine has centuries of vegetarian tradition. Nearly half our menu is plant-based — from creamy paneer dishes to dal, chana masala, and vegetable biryani — every bit as complex and satisfying as our meat dishes.

1. Who We Are

CurryHouse operates the online ordering service at curryhousejar.no and the mobile apps on Google Play and the Apple App Store. For GDPR purposes we are the data controller. Contact: orders@curryhousejar.no

2. Data We Collect

We collect only what is necessary to provide our ordering service:

We do not collect payment data (orders are paid at pickup). We do not use analytics SDKs, advertising networks, or third-party tracking.

3. How We Use Your Data

Legal basis: performance of a contract (your order) and legitimate interest (order notifications).

4. Push Notifications

The mobile app requests permission to send push notifications solely for order status updates. You can withdraw permission at any time in your device Settings → Notifications → CurryHouse.

5. Data Sharing

We do not sell or rent your personal data. We share data only with:

We retain your data while your account is active. When you delete your account, personal data is removed within 30 days, except records required for legal purposes.

7. Your Rights (GDPR)

You have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict, and port your personal data, and to object to processing. To delete your account immediately, use Delete Account (sign in required). For other requests email orders@curryhousejar.no — we respond within 30 days.

You may also lodge a complaint with Datatilsynet (Norwegian Data Protection Authority).

8. Security

All data is transmitted over HTTPS. Passwords are hashed and never stored in plain text. Production data access is restricted to authorised personnel.

9. Children's Privacy

Our service is not directed at children under 16. Contact us at orders@curryhousejar.no if you believe we have inadvertently collected such data.

10. Changes & Contact

We may update this policy and will notify you of material changes by updating the date above. Questions? Email orders@curryhousejar.no.
